Downtown Columbus Engagement

Andrew and Heather are both Architects, a profession that is near and dear to my heart, as my father is an architect as well. They met at Kent State which has a killer architecture program and spent long nights working on projects together. They both have a diverse range of interests and are very wise beyond their years….to an impressive degree.

For their engagement shoot, we let the architecture of downtown Columbus be our inspiration. We found lots of cool angles, details and textures to work with. It was early July and down by the riverfront vendors were setting up for the 4th of July fireworks celebrations so the streets were alive with excitement. The sun was direct and bright in the sky which provided the opportunity for cool silhouettes and some more dramatic shots. I loved Heather’s high pony tail and bold blue dress- it was the perfect color for photos. These two have a refreshing mix of being laid back, silly and super sweet with each-other. I just loved hanging out with them for an afternoon.

Their wedding was the following month in August so it was fun hearing about how their wedding planning was coming along. I especially loved hearing them describe the cookie table they’d be having. I could talk about cookies everyday. You’d have to ask my husband, but I probably actually do talk about cookies everyday. I digress.

I can’t wait to share these with you all today! Urban portraits are some of my all-time favorite photos to take, because I love the uniqueness of all the locations and the feeling of exploring when we walk around finding them together. A German Village Engagement

It was a perfect spring day with a subtle breeze in the air, just enough to make a small piece of hair come to life. Amanda and Eric met me at the Grange Insurance Audubon for their engagement session, and then we drove to German Village and took some more photos paparazzi style! I was a little obsessed with shooting in this area of Columbus this past spring. All of the brick streets looked extra quaint with all of the flower boxes having freshly planted flowers around every corner.

I can’t get over Amanda’s stunning eyes- they’re captivating. And they both have such a genuine smile- they make a super cute couple and will make a very good-looking bride and groom come this November. Until then, enjoy these photos! It was such a stunner of a day! XO Jess

German Village Engagement

I loved this shoot so much that I literally overloaded my Instagram with Saji and Shanka’s images right after they were delivered. If you haven’t yet- check out my Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jmillerphotos/ – it’s where I post my most up-to-date and recently delivered photos.

It was early spring, however the weather was oddly prefect. I’m still in-love with the outfits they chose. Solid bright colors will always bring life and a dash of joy to any photo. I love to do what I call “paparazzi engagement shoots”. This is where we all hop in a car and discover new locations together, stopping whenever any of us feels inspired. Besides being super fun, it gets people’s mind out of the realm of ‘camera vs couple’, and into just having a fun time together as a unit.

These two had lived in the same city very briefly when they met, and then spent the majority of their time dating long-distance. As of now, they are happily married and now in the same city! Their wedding took place in Sri Lanka in late Springtime, a few weeks after our shoot in German Village in downtown Columbus. They are laid back, funny and so fun to watch together. I really couldn’t be more excited to share these photos with the world today! I hope you love them half as much as I loved shooting them:) XO Jess

Equestrian Engagement Shoot

Ok, this shoot was everything. I’ve loved horses forever, but never really did anything with the love except for I went to horse camp when I was little and I used to have forest green wrangler riding boots. When Olivia told me she wanted her horse Figaro in her and Austin’s engagement shoot, I said yes yes yes!!!

When I got to the barn, Figaro was being groomed for his photos 🙂 A friendly barn cat came and supervised the whole operation. Seriously, I think every shoot should have a horse in it. They are such elegant creatures…needless to say, I was impressed.

From the barn we ventured over to Slate Run Metro Park where Olivia and Austin’s dogs joined us. They were both loves who just wanted to cuddle and get all the belly rubs. I love the unexpected nature of shoots with animals. It’s very much like shooting with toddlers. There’s not much control over the situation, and that in itself makes it perfect- it’s real. We finished the session with just Olivia and Austin deeper into the park itself. Their love of the outdoors was prevalent when we walked up to the wetlands area, and Austin confessed, “yea, this is more my speed”. He started talking about hunting and fishing right away. He’s an outdoors-man for sure. I’m so excited for their wedding next year, but equally as excited to share these photos today! I hope you love them half as much as I loved taking them! XO Jess

Columbus Surprise Engagement

One day i found the funniest message in my inbox. It was from Robert, and it said:

To Whom It May Concern,

I am proposing to my girlfriend in Columbus on April 1 (it’s not a joke I’m being 100% serious) and I was looking to speak with someone about a quote and a plan on how this can be pulled off?

After a few back and forth messages, we had a plan in place. Kelly, his unsuspecting soon-to-be fiance, thought he was in a completely different state. She was just going to go out with some of her friends for brunch in downtown Columbus at Milestone 229. April 1st of this year was a very cold and windy day, but you forgot all about the weather the moment the surprise went down.

Kelly spotted Robert and started running towards him, shouting “this is my moment!”. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was so sweet and she was so floored. Her response was priceless and you could tell both of them literally couldn’t have been any happier. After a couple of photos, the couple went into the warm restaurant and sipped on champagne and celebrated with friends and family who had flown in for the event. What a cool and memorable day April Fool’s day will be for them. Enjoy! XO Jess

Scioto Mile Engagement

This is my last blog post for a 2016 session – can’t wait to show you all the springtime goodness on the blog in the upcoming weeks. But let’s flashback now to the beautiful fall! Donna and Tim used to live down by the Scioto Mile, so we decided it would be the perfect place to do photos. The foliage around the area is perfection in the late fall. These two were so relaxed and naturally just laughed with each-other in front of the camera. Thank you so much to Donna and Tim for having me with you on this perfect day! XO Jess

Columbus Urban Engagement

Molly and Eric met me out on a very cold and windy day last fall right at the cusp of winter. The cold breeze made for some beautiful photos, as they were both trying to stay warm snuggled against each other. Little did I know at the time those photos of kisses and warm looks were backed with a story of deep love and personal triumph.

Molly could quite possibly be one of the brides I talk to my husband about the most. I am friends with her on facebook, and every time she posts something, it makes me more in-awe of what a powerhouse she is. For example, she just ran a 1:22 half marathon. For people who run those, you’ll know that’s a time worthy of a Runner’s World magazine story. She can also run a full marathon in less than 3 hours and recently finished 4th at the Glass City Marathon. We’ll just say those aren’t even her biggest victories!

German Village session

Erin and David both have a fun and energetic aura that follows them. It can’t be explained any other way. I think they are the perfect couple. Since our first meeting, which left me laughing so hard I was crying, I hoped beyond hoped they would have me to document their wedding and engagement…and I won the lottery, because as luck would have it, this September I’ll be with them!

Last fall, we traveled around German Village on quite possibly one of the prettiest days of the year, and laughed, and cuddled, and laughed some more. And when I say “we”, I mean them, of course. That would be weird if I cuddled with my clients. I think my coffee kicked in. I digress.

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is meeting all the wonderful people and hearing about their diverse backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences. The fact that I love meeting new people almost comes as ironic, because I’m not particularly fond of small talk or disingenuous conversations. When I find people who are like that as well, it almost feels like something has clicked- like photographing them is super easy at that point. Erin and David were like that for me. It’s hard to explain, but I just feel really lucky they walked through my door. Anyways, I’m rambling. I hope you love seeing these beautiful fall photos now that it’s spring. LOL.

Stefphanie and Sean

Stefphanie and Sean have known each other since the fourth grade, and as it often happens, life brought them together again. They are now set to get married later this year in an intimate Ohio ceremony. For their engagement shoot, we traveled all around downtown Columbus and captured their love and light for each other. Stefphanie has a knockout smile that will stop you in your tracks and a sense of style to match. Sean has warm and loving eyes…the kind that speak love without saying anything at all. These two share a thirst for life. It’s obvious = from the way the laugh and play with each-other, to the way they reach out and care about the Columbus community at large. Congratulations you two! I am so beyond excited for you both, and while I can’t be with you as you tie the knot, I send all the love in the world. Thank you for this day- it was a definite highlight of my year last year! OSU Engagement Session

Jessica and Misti are so laid back, down-to-earth and quick to joke with each-other- From our very first time meeting, I knew I was in like company. Jessica is an avid OSU fan, so we naturally had their engagement shoot on a beautiful fall day last year on campus. It was a Sunday, so everything had already been cleaned up after tailgating and partying, but there was a really cool chalk drawing still right in front of the Stadium. It was a forced perspective drawing, so when you lined up with it just right, it seemed to pop out at you. Because it was fall, all of the bushes were bright red in front of the stadium, not a coincidence I’m sure! All the Buckeye trees were as golden as the afternoon sun. Even though it was the weekend, campus was still somewhat alive, which brought a fun energy to the session. Fall in Ohio is simply the best- I need to get more timely with these blog posts, as it’s totally spring now. I was just so energized by spending time with these two. They are so fun…and I think it’s pretty amazing they even laughed at my stupid jokes. Were they just being nice?

I can’t wait for their wedding later this year. They are so beautiful inside and out. I hope you love these Jess and Misti! XO Jess
